Have you every clicked on an e-mail that changed your life ?
Well, this is exactly what happened to me a few years ago. The sinking feeling that came with calling “an emergency team meeting”. An emergency team meeting filled me with dread.
Then ..
The emergency team meeting confirmed my fears, my job was at risk and it was looking like the only option was redundancy. The thoughts and feelings were overwhelming; self-blame, a sense of failure, panic, sadness, but mostly noticeable was anger. I felt like I had worked hard and I was a respected member of staff.
Colleagues and friends were reassuring and kind, but it did feel personal and that I had no choice… what was I going to do ! I felt a big loss of my identity.
Now…
After, anger, feeling like a failure and panicking, some words got through. Meeting with an ex-colleague; “I have always thought you would make a good counsellor”, Ping ! This comment stayed with me, and I looked into how to become a counsellor and if it would be possible.
The only answer I came up with was “Yes, I think this is the change of direction for me !” I have an interest in people, their development, what is important and what could stand in their way. So, I undertook the training to become a counsellor. Not only have I got a new job it has given me the opportunity to grow as a person.
